Torment: Tides of Numenera Kickstarter Passes Goal Twice Over

You might have heard a few days ago about the spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment being up on Kickstarter and the project which it was undergoing to get created. What you also might have heard is the record-breaking time in which it was not only funded but proceeded to break the one million mark.

The original Planescape: Torment was an RPG cult classic from the late 90s which is best remembered for its expansive story and basis in AD&D's Forgotten Realms. Emphasising more upon the tale it was telling and how it was going to tell it, Planescape placed less emphasis upon the combat and mechanics than many titles of its time. This is largely what helped it to endue the years and retain the positive attention it still receives today despite advances in mechanics and technology.

With the development team for the original having mostly returned and the cult classic status of the original title, it seemed like this was going to be a profitable success but this has easily exceeded all predictions. Within just six hours it had reached the $900,000 mark they required and were well over a million not long after that. Spokesperson Brian Fargo speaking for the development team inXile had only this to say in immediate response to this development: "You’ve got to be freaking kidding me!! We just funded in six hours!?!?!" and considering how unexpectedly fast a success this has been who can blame him.

As it stands now the title is has reached all but one of its additional goals, with over two million in supporting funds. This means that the game currently has, as their goals claim, 100% increased gameplay with several novellas to be produced based upon the universe, a vastly improved musical score, several new areas, the option to choose character gender, additional companions and a much deeper story. Further details on the goals can be found to the left. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be one to help them get the D&D Planescape licence to make this a true sequel of sorts of have it in the same setting.

The team is also currently working on a sequel to Wasteland, another famed classic, which is close to completion. However they have been able to start work on Torment thanks to the writing and concept art for that game being largely finished and for members of their team to start the groundwork needed for the months of writing and developing concepts they require.

The Kickstarter project itself can be found here along with frequent updates and further details upon what is going to be included within the title. Let's hope what we get lives up to the hype.
